Ignore the original text on this post, the coupon code no longer works, but I’ve made up a TON more headbands, ready to ship out the next day so you will have them for the final round of playoffs.
Help me make enough money for my trip to Chicago to look for a job! ;)
Buy one here!
I am almost certain that some SJW blogger is eventually going to flip shit over this. Just a warning.
Yeah, like me. Might I suggest perusing http://this-is-not-native.tumblr.com/ to understand why?
yeah watch out for all the angry brown people whose sole purpose is to take away all your fun and not, you know, point out that you’re being a racist jackass
but her headband is inspired by a hockey team, not directly by the generalization of native culture. if you have an issue with that, take it up with the team itself, not someone creating a simply headband that was designed to represent a team.
And was their “inspiration” not from the generalization of the diversity among Native cultures? How did you end up breaking the two apart!? Where did she get her “inspiration” from if not from the logo that’s downright racist? If you’re perpetuating stereotypes then you’re a part of the problem. Your intent doesn’t matter. If you’re not aware and you’re told about it, you can no longer place blame on any other party. Yet doing this knowingly or not doesn’t matter because it still harms Native Americans.
That is the fault of the TEAM and FRANCHISE. And I invite you to take it up with them. I understand what it implies, and I understand how people can be offended. But then you could approach her respectfully and educate her, without attacking her, did that ever cross your mind? People tend to respond to someone trying to bring peace then starting up an argument. Either way, the root of this problem is not this one individual but an entire franchise. She is not the first individual to create a product based off the team and she will not be the last. What’s even more important is the franchise generating thousands of dollars off of this racism not simply this one person.
Where did I attack her? Point it out. Point out how and where my explanation was an attack. You’re getting wrongfully defensive about an issue which doesn’t concern you but apparently, your input still matters?
If I go out and put on blackface and I use your “logic” that it isn’t my fault but rather, it’s the fault of white people for creating blackface, how the hell does that work? If I put on a necklace with a cross and a Christian rightfully points out my appropriation of a sacred symbol and I say, “Well hey, don’t blame me, blame capitalism, stores like F21 does it so you should address them first,” does that make sense?
If you’re a part of the problem, you’re at fault. Don’t place blame on others when we all have the solution and will within our own hands to not perpetuate these racist stereotypes. This was NOT an action of the franchise. She did it. Not the team. She’s still at fault.
Look I’m sorry this offends you. I just feel no point in even giving my point of view at this point, good night I wish you the best of luck in whatever it is you’re trying to accomplish here.
1. Establishing that people getting offended is worse than your defending an offense? [check]
2. Condescending attitude in place of awareness of how wrongful the perpetuation and commodification of such a stereotype really is? [check]
1. Choosing to believe exactly what you want to about me regardless of truth [check]
like seriously I’m just tired and don’t feel like fighting and I have homework to do, please don’t reply good bye.
Who said this is about fighting? You said yourself that individuals should be educated on this issue but you decided to shut out the second you could no longer defend your wrongful stance on the issue.
Uuuuuuuuuuugh the people aggressively supporting their right to wear these headbands are too (willfully?) stupid and unwilling to accept any consequences of their actions or even face the remotest possibility that they might be in the wrong so there doesn’t seem to be that much point in getting involved but I just wanted to add another voice to the “what the hell are you doing here” chorus.
“These symbols were already inappropriately stolen and repurposed by a sports team, it’s totally their fault” is a really really shitty excuse. Yes, it is a sports logo. Yes, a lot of sports teams have problematic logos. Yes, they should change their logo. None of these things makes it ok to also use and spread the stereotypical, oversimplified, appropriated images from that logo.
And profit off it hahaha it’s cool it’s not like native Americans are still suffering from the effects of all the massive genocide European settlers perpetrated and the various racist policies that followed, and it’s not like the rest of America is still benefiting big-time from that genocide, and it’s not like spreading stereotypical images contributes to mistaken impressions of native Americans and allows people to exoticize and dehumanize them, and it’s not like viewing people as some sort of “other” ever has negative effects on actual real people. :|
So yeah there’s totally nothing wrong with this and everyone pointing out why it’s problematic is just totally out of line and picking on you, those cruel and hateful people. Hahahaha clearly.
You should really take a second to read my previous post.
GO BRUINS YEAHHH
